LETTER FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR’s DESK
Thoracic organ ( Heart and Lung ) transplantation is like no other procedure in terms of meticulous detail and planning. Our team carefully completes a series of sequential and vitally important steps to ensure that patients are appropriate candidates and are well prepared for transplantation. This care and precision, we believe, is reflected in our higher-than-average survival statistics and excellent long term outcomes.
We also believe education is a key component to the preparation process because patients who are better informed, tend to deal with post-transplant demands more successfully. Knowledge is empowering and demystifying for both patients and their caregivers. Caregiver and patient education empowers them to make the right choices thereby giving individuals suffering from terminal Heart failure and advanced Lung disease, a renewed lease on life. At the Heart Failure and Lung Transplant Program - Gleneagles Global Hospitals, more patients leave our centre every year with new hearts, lungs and a renewed lease of life. Within our transplant centers, you will find some of the top specialists in the nation in the areas of Heart Failure, Cardiac and Lung Transplant and Mechanical Circulatory Assist Devices.
We performed our successful first heart transplant in 2012. This was preceded by some pioneering work in the field of single lung transplants in adults, suffering from a variety of terminal lung conditions. This work was without precedent in the sub-continent and we were acknowledged torch bearers in the field. We currently perform an average of 80 Heart & double Lung Transplants annually. We have successfully commissioned three new centers at Bangalore, Mumbai & Hyderabad with the Center of Excellence (COE) at Gleneagles hospital Chennai. If the current pace continues, we could perform approximately 100-120 heart, lung and combined Heart-Lung transplants this year. It is also not surprising , our team is recognized as a leader in the implantation of ventricular assist devices (VADs) in adults and children. We are the only team in Asia-Pacific that works on the most advanced axial and centrifugal heart pumps , including the remotely monitored LVAD, empowering patients and physicians alike with long term remote monitoring and continued individualized care. Our outcomes following heart transplants and ventricular assist device implants are among the best in the country. At our centre, you will be treated by some of the most experienced physicians in their fields. You will meet one-on-one with our experienced specialists and support staff, who will get to know all your medical needs and you as an individual. By getting to know you and your
